Rough Cut Feedback and Improvments

By viewing our rough cut music video with the rest of our class we were able to get constructive feedback from our peers and teachers. This will help us greatly when it comes to producing our final music video as we are able to see what people enjoyed from our rough cut and what they though needed improving.

What they enjoyed:

  • Narrative concept
  • Fades in the performance element
  • 'Dream girl' disappearing shots
  • Use of time laps
  • Good range of shots
  • Lighting
  • Creative locations
  • Editing on the beat of the music
  • Performance - Professional/ Excellent location/ Creative lighting
  • Close up on instruments
  • Grass 360 shot
  • Timing of the Video
  • Editing of shots
Improvements:
  • Shots being too long - We when we edit we are going to add more frequent cuts to different footage to make sure no shot is too long.
  • Shots being to dark - unable to see actors - The possibility of change the contrast of the footage in Adobe Premier, if this is not possible then we will refilm this footage again, making sure the lighting is better and actors visable.
  • Lip Syncing of lead singer - We are going to refilm the performance part to our music video. This is get a different range of shot including close ups on the lead singer meaning in editing it will be easier to sync his singing to the music.
  • Clearer understanding of narrative - As a group we agreed that we didnt have enough narrative in the rough cut this meant it wasn't clear. We are going to solve this by adding more narrative to the final cut.
  • Better mise on scene of characters - By researching the genre and looking at professional music videos we have gained a greater knowlegde of the genre and are therefore going to change the clothes of the band members and the 'dream girl's' clothes.
  • Repetition of footage - When refilming for our final cut, we are making sure that we have enough footage to cover the song even if it is not used.
  • More close ups needed - We are going to solve this by having more close ups in the performance such as the lead singer and of instruments. Also in the narrative to convey the emotion of the actors.
  • Violin shot needed - We didn't include this in our rough cut so we have adding a violin to our band performance.
  • Framing of particular shots - As mentioned in an earlier post we ended up using two different types of cameras which gave us an issues of framing. This is being solved by only using one type of camera for the final.
  • Lead singer looking into camera in performance - We looked at music videos by The All American Rejects and found their lead singer looks into the camera alot as if to communicate with the audience. We are going to replicate this.
  • More energetic performance - Our performance already had energy but again after research we found our performance could so with more energy so by refilming we can ensure this.
  • Relevance to red envelopes - This links to a clearer narrative. By having a clearer narrative the significance of the red envelopes will being clearer as it plays its part in the narrative.
  • Lead singer chewing gum - We are going to refilm the performance, making sure this time round he isn't chewing when we shoot.
  • Intro - shorter shots - We discussed this idea and have decided that we when edit will make sure the footage only last a couple of seconds before we cut to a different shot of the performance.
Overall our rough cut video was received well by our classmates and teachers. It was said to be a 'strong rough cut' which means we are on the right road for the final. The improvement ideas we have gotten back will all be taken into consideration and discussed in the group about what we can do to improve on these points when filming and editing the final music video.
